Friend to Foe:Evolution of the Feud Between Katy Perry and Taylor Swift

It’s been three years since Taylor Swift released “Bad Blood,” the song that revealed her feud with Katy Perry. Now as Taylor begins promoting her new album Reputation, more details about their feud have been circulating. So how did their “mad love” turn into “bad blood”?

Katy and Taylor are photographed together on the red carpet at the MTV Video Music Awards. And there was a very different Miley Cyrus by their side.

July 2009: Their “mad love” began

Taylor was keen to share her admiration for Katy’s Waking Up In Vegas. And Katy was awfully grateful for her kind words and even offered chances of collaboration.

December 2009: Birthday wishes

They seemed to be the best of pals from 2009 up until 2011, and in December 2009, Katy wished Taylor a happy birthday and even called her “beautiful girl”.

January 2010: Still besties

They would still joke around backstage at the Grammys.

November 2011: Sweet hug

Katy and Taylor hug at the 2011 American Music Awards, looking especially friendly.

2012: Ex boyfriend issue — their romance with John Mayer

Taylor dated John Mayer from 2009 to 2010. In 2012, Katy ended up dating John. Although this is not a direct issue, no one really cares for their boyfriend’s ex or their ex’s new girlfriend, right?

February 2013: A Little Bit of Awkwardness

Instead of the awards-show hug, we only see a distant hand clasp at the Grammys. Could this be the start of their feud? Did John Mayer set everything into motion?

December 2013:From “Mad Love” to “Bad Blood”

This is the year when the feud secretly began. Three dancers who were in Taylor’s tour got asked by Katy again to join her upcoming Prismatic World Tour, and they all agreed.

In an interview in December 2013, Lockhart, one of the dancers, explained the whole story: “Obviously we were with Katy for two and a half years, she’s like family to us, so we were, like, ‘Absolutely.’ We weren’t really dancing in Taylor’s tour anyway so I had got a little bored and I really wanted to do a promo tour.” So, they left.

September 2014: Taylor’s Rolling Stone interview

In 2014, Taylor got interviewed by Rolling Stone magazine and talked about her new song “Bad Blood”, when she revealed details of her crumbling relationship with a celebrity friend.

“For years, I was never sure if we were friends or not. She would come up to me at awards shows and say something and walk away, and I would think, ‘Are we friends, or did she just give me the harshest insult of my life?’  She did something so horrible. I was like, ‘Oh, we’re just straight-up enemies’. And it wasn’t even about a guy! It had to do with business.  She basically tried to sabotage an entire arena tour. She tried to hire a bunch of people out from under me. ”

September 2014: Katy’s clap back

The day after the Rolling Stone interview came out, Katy tweeted about “Regina George”. Without any other context to refer to, we could only say it’s linked to TS’s RS quotes, right?

Jan. 30, 2015: Katy’s Interview Rebuttal

Katy addressed the whole thing in an interview with Billboard Magazine, right before her halftime performance at the Super Bowl. “If somebody is trying to defame my character, you’re going to hear about it.”

July 2015: The VMAs Tweets

Taylor had a mini Twitter feud with Nicki Minaj, and Katy somehow got herself involved. Nicki got pissed off about that year’s VMA nominations, and called out issues on twitter. Then Taylor tweeted back to the rapper, “I’ve done nothing but love and support you. It’s unlike you to pit women against each other.” Nicki quickly replied to clarify. But Katy Perry weighed in and made a pretty obvious reference to Taylor’s tweet.

July 2016: Calvin Harris get involved

In the aftermath of her breakup from Calvin Harris, Taylor reportedly claimed a writing credit on Calvin’s new song, “This Is What You Came For.” Calvin Harris tweeted that he wouldn’t allow Taylor to bury him “like Katy.” Then Katy tweeted a somewhat related Hillary Clinton GIF.

But here’s the killer… Katy retweeted her own tweet from May 2015.

May 2017: Katy’s new single — response to Bad Blood?

Katy released the third single off her new album, Witness, which seemed like another shot fired at Taylor. The album art shows Katy holding a receipt that says, “Karma Coffee & Tea.”

August 2017: “Look What You Made Me Do”

Taylor appears to imitate Katy in her ‘Look What You Made Me Do’ video. The video is known to have a whole lot of  hidden messages, including an apparent swipe at Kim Kardashian, but we must say that Taylor looks very much like Katy in one scene.

Will the feud end?

Although Perry has expressed her desire to end the feud, with Swift’s new album set to arrive in November, it remains unclear whether there’s an end in sight for the bad blood between the super stars.
